In 1912 production of the tobacco in Bassarabia it has been concentrated, mainly in Orgeevsky (70 % of the areas and 72,53 % of total gathering of edge), Soroksky (18,06 % and 17,6 %) and Hotinsky districts (8,08 % and 5,34 % according ).
Development of branch of tobacco in modern Moldova was promoted by high population density, historically a wide experience saved up in cultivation of this culture, presence of favorable circumstances and a climate. As a result Moldova in 80th years became the largest manufacturer of tobacco in the Eastern Europe and its largest supplier in the former USSR.
The highest level of production of a tobacco leaf is necessary for 1986 when its volume has exceeded 130 thousand tons. Tobacco was and remains for Republic Moldova of one of the priority cultures having the big potential possibilities for stabilization of economy and increase of incomes manufacturer tobacco.
Tobacco is grown up in many country of the world. Largest of these countries are China which annually produces about 3.0 million tons, the USA - 800 thousand tons, India and Brazil – on 600 thousand tons, Turkey - 300 thousand tons, Greece, Indonesia and Italy approximately from 130 to 170 thousand tons of tobacco. In Europe the main manufacturers of tobacco are Italy, Greece, Bulgaria, Moldova and Poland.
